Law Office of Terence G. O'Brien
We work with a number of small businesses to create or refresh their identity and web presence. One such company is The Law Office of Terence G. O'Brien. The client was partner in a firm for over 15 years in Hastings, MN before starting his own office in St. Paul. His practice specializes in Family Law, Criminal Defense, Estate Planning, Mediation Services, Business & Commercial and Appeals. For full disclosure right up front, this is a Big Brother/Little Sister project, so you know meetings were filled with inappropriate teasing and button-pushing.
As with many small business branding projects, the problem was how to differentiate him from the myriad of other smaller law firms out there. This is where years of personal knowledge came in handy. Mr. O'Brien is a big history buff, especially American History. This shows itself through his many interests including a collection of Civil War items and a love for architecture. The minimalist color palette and decorative details were inspired by his collection, but given a twist to project a sense of trustworthiness, professionalism and contemporary appeal. His cards are duplex letterpress pieces printed by local Angel Bomb with metallic PMS and debossed patterning. These details are repeated on the stationery printed by Modern Press.
For the website, the client needed something that he could update himself, a blog for regular postings, and an email & map feature for his clients. We went with a modified Squarespace template with a parallax feature keeping all information in a simple 4-page layout, which still helps him stand out from his competitors. While the client provided much of the basic content, we worked with the outstanding copywriter, Diane Richard, to finesse his brand voice.
In the end, this was a good example where trusting relationships and great communication between designers and clients led to a sophisticated and simple solution the client can easily maintain for his business.
